ARE YOUR PARENTS AFRAID YOU WILL FAIL ..OR..?

Are your parents afraid you’ll fail—or afraid you’ll succeed without following the path they chose for you?

We’ve been taught to treat college as the default: graduate, enroll, earn a degree, and trust that the rest will work itself out. For many people, that path is valuable. But valuable doesn’t mean universal—and traditional doesn’t mean automatically right.

Choosing a path outside college can feel like breaking a rule. Maybe you want to learn a trade, build a business, create something, work your way up, or explore a route no one around you has taken. That choice may make people uncomfortable. Sometimes their concern comes from love; sometimes it comes from fear of the unfamiliar. Either way, their expectations don’t have to become your limits.

Here’s the question we don’t ask often enough: **Why do we treat one kind of success as respectable and every other kind as a risk?** A degree can open doors, but it isn’t a guarantee. Skipping college can save time or money, but it isn’t a shortcut to an easy life. Every path has trade-offs. The rebellious move isn’t rejecting college just to be different—it’s refusing to choose blindly.

So question the script. Look at the costs, the opportunities, the skills you’ll need, and the life you actually want. Talk to people who have taken different routes. Make a plan that’s yours—not one built only to reassure other people.

Choosing differently may challenge the myth that there’s only one respectable road. And if your choice makes someone question their assumptions, that doesn’t automatically mean you’re wrong. It may mean the conversation is overdue.
